Thank you to everyone who has been
generous in their donations of ceramic mugs. We started using them
as our other cups "walked" out with our guests and we were left with
a very limited supply. Now we are finding the same thing is
happening with out plastic bowls. They are being thrown away or
taken out so our friends can continue to eat their oatmeal while
they walk down the street. If anyone has
plastic cereal bowls they would like to get rid of, we would be
happy to take them off your hands. Just box
them up and bring them down to the Center Monday through Friday
between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. It doesn't matter what color they
are - the only thing we ask is that they be a durable plastic and a
cereal size.
At the Outreach Center, also called the
Canticle Cafe, we serve the
homeless, the working poor and the impoverished seniors in Downtown
Detroit. We serve between 200 to 500 guests throughout the day, five
days a week - We are closed Sundays and Wednesdays. Our hours
operation during week are 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on Saturdays we
are open from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
We work with homeless people to address
the underlying problems of addiction, lack of self esteem, mental
health and traumatic history to help them regain their dignity and
to realize their value in our world. At the same time we address
their immediate needs for food, clothing and shelter.
We also work with seniors to assist them
in preserving and improving their quality of life. We do this
through the Senior Program, Pastoral Visitation and Health Ministry
programs.
Some of the services we provide include:
case
management
referrals for
substance abuse treatment, medical assistance, employment,
housing and shelters
rent and
utility assistance
grocery bags
(for people 50 and older, living in the 48226 zip code area)
oatmeal, sandwiches
and coffee
clothing and
hygiene kits
referrals for
State ID, birth certificates and school records
referrals for
furniture
blood
pressure screenings and health advocacy by the Parish Nurse
internet
training and access
We offer a safe
and caring environment where our guests can relax, enjoy coffee and
donuts and morning television. We have also started baking cinnamon
rolls in our kitchen for our guests.
There are many
opportunities to volunteer at the Outreach Center. If interested in
volunteering, please call Camilla Lunsford. If you would like to
come and see everything we do, feel free to stop by during our open
hours and we will be happy to take you on a tour.
are almost empty of men's
clothing! With this vastly changing weather we have given most of it
to our guests - as well as our neighbors.
Also, we believe deep in our
hearts that warm and hot weather will be with us soon! This is a
time when we try to give our guests baseball hats, chapstick and
sunglasses. If you can help with any of that it is appreciated.
